CALGARY, AB -- After an offensive outburst in Edmonton, the Calgary Flames failed to score a single goal against the San Jose Sharks and fell 1-0 on Tuesday night.
Benn Ferriero scored the lone goal in the outing while Sharks netminder Antti Niemi recorded 25 saves.
Miikka Kiprusoff made 26 stops in the loss.
The Flames have now lost five straight to the Sharks.
San Jose was mere millimetres from opening the scoring near the end of the first period when a shot bounced over Kiprusoff with Logan Couture and Patrick Marleau perched around the net. Somehow, Kiprusoff and Scott Hannan combined to make a couple of tremendous saves.
While the Flames controlled the majority of the play in the first period, the Sharks picked up their game in the second stanza.
They held the Flames to just three shots on net while San Jose rifled 11 at Kiprusoff.
The Sharks broke the deadlock at 11:35 of the third period. Kiprusoff made a good save on Dan Boyle's point shot but the rebound eluded him.
Ferriero was able to grab the puck out of mid-air and slip it into the net for his sixth goal of the season. Couture and Boyle notched the assists.
Calgary poured the pressure on late in the game but Niemi stood tall, denying them on every shot. The Flames ended up taking a too-many-men minor, quelling the surge of momentum they had.
