TAMPA BAY, FL -- The Calgary Flames late comeback attempt against the Tampa Bay Lightning was halted in overtime by a Steven Stamkos goal.
Calgary scored twice in the third period to even up the score, including a late power play marker by Olli Jokinen, but their second period sunk them.
They surrendered three goals in the middle frame and allowed 18 shots on net while only sending five at Mathieu Garon.
The night didn't start out the way the Flames would have liked as they took their first penalty in the first five minutes.
Jokinen was called for hooking at 3:30 and the Flames penalty killers nearly escaped unscathed but the Lightning's potent power play, clicking at 20.4 percent coming into the game, opened the scoring with just 19 seconds remaining in the minor.
While the Flames weren't able to score on their first power play of the game - brought on by a Matt Gilroy cross-check to Brendan Morrison in the corner - but they were able to capitalize a just under a minute after the penalty expired.
Calgary's power play added their second goal of the evening after hemming the Lightning in their own end for close to a minute. Olli Jokinen hit Jarome Iginla with a perfect pass from the corner and the captain ripped a one-timer past Garon for his team-leading 12th goal of the year.
At 10:10, Ryan Shannon's hard work in front of the net enabled Tom Pyatt to score the Lightning's second goal of the game. Shannon's close-range backhander was stopped by Kiprusoff but the rebound trickled to Pyatt and he slapped it into the net.
Shortly after, Ryan Malone's one-timer from the slot evaded Kiprusoff to give the home team their second lead of the game.
Nate Thompson made it a 4-2 affair after two periods of play when his sharp angle shot went off Butler and into the back of the net with just 33 seconds left in the stanza.
Rene Bourque, who missed Tuesday's tilt in Nashville with the flu, pulled the Flames within a goal early in the third period with a breakaway tally.
Defenceman Victor Hedman took a slashing call 15:06 of the frame and the Flames managed to connect with the man advantage. Alex Tanguay's point shot was deflected by Jokinen, giving the pivot his ninth goal of the year.
