CALGARY, AB -- Two third period power play goals helped carry the Calgary Flames to a 3-2 victory over the Colorado Avalanche.

The Flames have struggled mightly on the power play at home this season but have greatly improved in their recent outings.

Calgary now has three power play goals in their past two games at the Scotiabank Saddledome.

The victory marked the Flames ninth straight win over the Avalanche. They have outscored Colorado 36-16 in that span.

After twenty minutes of play, the game was scoreless but the ice was tilted in Calgary's favour as they outshot Colorado 10-4.

Colorado took two penalties in the frame but the Flames were unable to find a way to beat Giguere.

The Avalanche had the best scoring opporunity in the first period when Matt Duchene was able to get by a couple of Flames along the boards and drive straight to the net. He deked around Kiprusoff but sent the puck through the paint instead of putting it into the empty net.

Calgary was awarded a four-minute power play when Jan Hedja smacked Jarome Iginla in the face with his stick and drew blood. The Flames were unable to generate any offence with the man advantage, only landing two shots on net.

Duchene made up for his first period gaffe when he broke the scoreless draw in the middle stanza.

Flames defenceman TJ Brodie was unable to clear the zone as Hedja blocked his attempt at the blueline. He dished the puck off to Duchene and he rifled a wrister in the slot that flew over Kiprusoff.

The Flames were awarded their second four-minute power play when T.J. Galiardi was nabbed for high-sticking at 4:35 of the third period and this time they didn't waste it.

Lee Stempniak scored with just 14 seconds remaining in the first minor penalty and then Curtis Glencross beat Giguere 1:26 later.

Colorado managed to notch the equalizer at 9:58 of the final frame when T.J. Galiardi scored his fourth of the season but the tally didn't dampen the Flames spirits.

They continued to press as time wound down and Olli Jokinen potted the game winner after an tic-tac-toe passing play with Glencross and Iginla.
