DETROIT, MI -- The Detroit Red Wings power play prowess led them to a 5-3 victory over the Calgary Flames on Wednesday night.
Detroit managed three goals with the man advantage and were able to draw five penalties throughout the battle.
The Red Wings opened the scoring at 6:14 while on the power play. Niklas Lidstrom's point shot was deftly deflected by Tomas Holmstrom, earning the forward his second goal of the year.
Flames captain Jarome Iginla notched the equalizer early in the middle frame. His linemate Alex Tanguay dished him the puck while he was driving through the slot and the winger snapped a hard shot past Jimmy Howard.
Calgary kept pressing and Brendan Morrison, who played in his first game since being taken off of the injured reserve, scored his first of the season.
As he cruised into the Red Wings zone, he took a shot from just outside the faceoff zone that flew over Howard's glove, hit the post and bounced into the net.
The back-and-forth pace continued when former Flame Ian White tied the game at 7:38 of the second period. He skated deep into the Flames zone and threw a shot on net that slid through Kiprusoff's legs.
The clubs exchanged power play markers in the opening half of the third period with Holmstrom scoring his second of the night and Olli Jokinen potting his fifth of the season.
Howard commited to a shot from TJ Brodie but the rookie blueliner sent a quick pass to the side of the net where Jokinen was waiting. Howard had no time to get over to make the stop and the forward had an open net to send his shot into.
With just over eight minutes to play, the Flames ran into penalty trouble. Mark Giordano and Curtis Glencross were both handed minor infractions and the Red Wings were given a 1:17 five-on-three opportunity. Pavel Datsyuk scored quickly with Lidstrom and Henrik Zetterberg assisting.
Valtteri Filppula added the Red Wings fifth goal of the evening at 13:53, sealing the win for Detroit.
