CALGARY, Alberta (AP) -Jiri Hudler scored the winning goal and had an assist in the Detroit Red Wings' 5-2 win over the Calgary Flames on Saturday night.
Kirk Maltby scored the lone goal of the first period and Brett Lebda netted his first of the season in the second to give the Red Wings (14-2-3) a 2-0 lead. Defenseman Andreas Lilja set up both goals.
Pavel Datsyuk added an insurance goal with 1:31 to go, and Marian Hossa finished the scoring with an empty netter as the Red Wings stretched their winning streak to five.
The Red Wings haven't lost in regulation in November (7-0-1) with four more games remaining in the month.
On a delayed penalty to the Flames, Hudler jumped off the bench as the extra attacker and fired a feed from Henrik Zetterberg into the top corner over goalie Miikka Kiprusoff's outstretched glove at 11:21 of the third.
Detroit backup goalie Ty Conklin made 31 saves to improve to 6-1.
The Red Wings opened the scoring at 4:26 of the first period when Maltby tipped a pass from Lilja just inside the left post behind Kiprusoff.
The Flames had a great chance to tie it in the second, but Eric Nystrom's shot from the slot got past Conklin before hitting linemate Matthew Lombardi to stay out of the net.
At 11:46 of the second, Lebda put the Wings up 2-0 when he snapped an innocent-looking shot from the top of the circle that beat Kiprusoff to the far side just over his right pad.
Just 36 seconds later, Glencross pulled the Flames to within a goal when he squeezed a close-in shot just under Conklin's left arm and into the net.
In the third, the Flames continued to press for the tying goal when Giordano wired a drop pass from Jarome Iginla into the top corner.
A short time later, Iginla fed a perfect pass up to Daymond Langkow who got away a quick shot that Conklin stopped with his right shoulder.
After Hudler's goal, Datsyuk sealed the win with a nice individual effort before slipping a shot between Kiprusoff's pads.By the Numbers: Curtis Glencross registered his third by tapping it in the corner left of Ty Conklin and tying the game 1-1 in the second. Mark Giordano got his first of the season when he tied the game again for the Flames. Both Jarome Iginla and Glencross assisted on that goal. Robyn Regehr recorded 25:10 of ice time and 31 shifts almost equal to Wings captain Niklas Lidstrom who was one-minute shy with 24:10 and 31 shifts also.
On the plus side, the Flames improved their penalty killing as Detroit was 0-6 in power play opportunities while the Flames were 1-7.
Turning Point: Curtis Glencross' game-tying wrister in the second increased the confidence of the Flames to work together in making better plays and more scoring chances, but the momentum was short-lived. "We have to play much better to beat a team like Detroit," Robyn Regehr commented. "We need more from everyone...when you make little mistakes or lack consistency, they capitalize on that even if it's in a shift."
Disagreements: There were plenty of words exchanged between Mike Cammalleri and Red Wings defenceman Niklas Kronwall throughout the game, but a real fight never came to fruition between the two.
The Roster: D Jim Vandemeer continues to be on the IR?Brandon Prust and Andre Roy were healthy scratches...The Red Wings were missing veteran D Chris Chelios with a fractured shin, Daniel Cleary, and Tomas Holmstrom.
Notes: Matthew Lombardi returned to the Calgary lineup after missing 13 games with an upper body injury. ... After scoring seven goals in his first 12 games with the Flames, Todd Bertuzzi has gone nine without one. ... Lilja has four assists in three games after recording only one in his first 14 contests.
