DALLAS (AP) -Matthew Lombardi was shocked to find the puck on his stick after a Dallas turnover in overtime. He knew what to do he got it.

Lombardi scored twice, including the winner, and the Calgary Flames rallied to beat the Stars 3-2 Friday night for their first victory of the season.

Lombardi took possession of the puck deep in the Dallas zone after a turnover on a blind pass by Stars captain Brenden Morrow. Lombardi took a quick shot and beat goaltender Marty Turco from the inside edge of the left circle to end a streak of seven straight defeats for the Flames in Dallas.

"You don't expect that, and just to see that, you kind of just jump on it," Lombardi said. "I didn't even know what kind of shot I was going to get off. I just kind of got lucky and found the back of the net."

Morrow passed back into his own zone, presuming that defenseman Mattias Norstrom would be behind him, but Norstrom had skated up ice anticipating that Morrow would dump the puck into the Calgary zone.

"There's nobody to blame but myself," Morrow said. "Our team counts on me to make good plays in situations like that and it was a bad play by me."

Coach Dave Tippett said his team's 15 giveaways, to only five for Calgary, were the difference.

"At key times of this game, we failed to protect the puck, and the biggest blunder was the last one that cost us the game," Tippett said.

Jarome Iginla also scored for the Flames (1-2-1), and Miikka Kiprusoff stopped 24 shots.

Mike Modano's goal for Dallas moved him within four points of matching Phil Housley's record for U.S.-born players, and Niklas Hagman continued his strong start with another goal.

Modano's one-timer from the left circle at 4:27 of the opening period was his first goal of the season, giving him 1,228 career points in his 1,243rd game and putting Dallas in front. Housley registered 1,232 points in 1,495 games.

Modano has 508 goals, the most for any U.S.-born player.

Iginla connected for his first goal of the season with 22 seconds left in the opening period on a wrist shot from beyond the right circle that got by a screened Turco. His goal came after he missed the net on a breakaway with about 3:35 left in the first.

Hagman's power-play goal from the left circle at 9:05 of the second was his fifth goal in five games, giving Dallas a 2-1 lead.

But Lombardi skated up the left side and got his first goal of the season at 10:46 of the third, tying it at 2.

"To lose two leads is tough, but they were desperate," Modano said.

Calgary coach Mike Keenan was well aware that his team hadn't won in Dallas in six years.

"We knew it was a tough place to play," Keenan said. "It was a really hard game, and I'm really proud of the way the team played. It was our best game for sure this year, on a consistent basis. We had to battle back twice from a goal deficit and found a way to win. It was a high-intensity game, almost like a playoff game, which is a compliment to both teams to play that hard at this juncture in the season."

Turco made 23 saves for the Stars (2-2-1).

Notes: With backup G Curtis McElhinney scratched due to a knee injury, rookie Matt Keetley is serving as Kiprusoff's backup and awaits his NHL debut. ... Turco caught a break at 13:26 of the second period when Daymond Langkow's shot hit the right post. ... It was Calgary's first victory in Dallas since it beat the Stars 4-3 on Dec. 14, 2001.
