EDMONTON, Alberta (AP) -When the Edmonton Oilers signed Petr Sykora last summer, they knew they were getting a player who could score. They also knew they were getting a player with a history of success against one of their biggest rivals.
Sykora had two goals and the Oilers beat the Calgary Flames 2-1 Tuesday night.
The teams were tied with just over 6 minutes left when Flames goalie Miikka Kiprusoff allowed a rebound on Ales Hemsky's shot and Sykora was there for his 11th goal of the season.
Sykora has 13 goals and nine assists in 20 career games against Calgary.
"Getting a couple points always feels good against that team," said Sykora, who has five points in three games against the Flames this season. "They were coming at us and on a six-game winning streak. It feels very good to break it and to extend our streak to four games.
"I hadn't scored in six games, so I felt I was kind of due to get one in and I was glad it was in this game."
Oilers coach Craig MacTavish said he's been impressed with Sykora's touch around the net.
"He has put up some pretty good numbers against the Flames," he said. "He's opportunistic to say the least. When he gets an opportunity he is going to put it in the back of the net."
Edmonton's Steve Staios received a delay of game penalty with 1:26 left but the Oilers killed off the power play to secure their fourth straight win.
"We played pretty good for the first 10 minutes and got the lead like we wanted, but then we couldn't finish it off," Calgary's Kristian Huselius said. "We lost our energy a little bit, especially in the third."
Calgary took advantage of a defensive breakdown to take a 1-0 lead in the first period. Oilers goalie Dwayne Roloson was trying to grab a shot when defenseman Daniel Tjarnqvist dug the puck away from him and lost it at the side of the net. Chuck Kobasew picked it up and passed to Kristian Huselius, who scored his seventh of the season.
Sykora tied it with a power-play goal on a slap shot with 31 seconds left in the first.
The Flames had the best scoring opportunity in the second period but Roloson dove forward to make a point-blank glove save on Jarome Iginla with Calgary enjoying a power play.
"I was just trying to stay with him the best I could," said Roloson, who finished with 23 saves. "I think it was still rolling when he shot it so he wasn't able to get a lot on it and luckily it ended up in my glove."
Notes: Staios signed a four-year extension Tuesday that will run through the 2010-11 season. The 33-year-old defenseman signed as a free agent with Edmonton in July 2001. ... Sykora has 13 goals in 20 career games against the Flames.
