CALGARY, Alberta (AP) - When David Legwand scores, the Nashville Predators win.
Legwand scored two goals Tuesday night to lead the Predators to a 3-2 victory over the Calgary Flames. Heading into the game, Legwand had scored only three times in 29 games this season, but all three were game-winners.
"Obviously you want to score every game," said Legwand, who ended a 10-game goal drought. "You just want to keep playing hard and getting goals. If I can keep scoring and we can keep winning then that's going to be good for the team."
Legwand, playing his fourth game since returning from a knee injury, last scored Nov. 23 in a win in Columbus. Since then, he missed 32 games with a knee injury that required surgery and was sent down to Milwaukee for a conditioning stint.
"It was a big effort for David," Nashville coach Barry Trotz said. "It's something that he can hopefully build on. We're going to need David to be a prominent player down the stretch here."
The Predators snapped a seven-game road losing streak.
"It's exciting," Legwand said. "We had a good meeting Monday and all the boys were talking about what each and everyone needs to do. It's something that we needed."
Greg Johnson added the deciding short-handed goal midway, and Steve Sullivan and Jared Smithson each had two assists to help the Predators rebound from a 3-2 overtime loss in Edmonton on Sunday night.
Just 51 seconds into the second period with the Flames on a power play, Phaneuf blasted a point shot past Tomas Vokoun to tie it at 1.
Only 90 seconds, later Legwand picked up his own rebound in the slot and wristed a shot past Kiprusoff to restore Nashville's lead.
The Predators made it 3-1 at 8:50 of the second on Johnson's fourth short-handed goal of the season. Phaneuf failed to keep the puck in the Predators' zone resulting in a 2-on-1 for Nashville. Johnson fired a slap shot from the top of the faceoff circle over Kiprusoff's outstretched glove hand.
"The puck was bouncing and I just kind of chipped it by the D," Johnson said. "I was fortunate enough to beat Kiprusoff because you don't beat him too often."
The Flames appeared to pull within a goal when defenseman Jordan Leopold backhanded a loose puck past Vokoun, but the goal was disallowed and Calgary was assessed a penalty for having too many men on the ice.
"We had too many men on the ice, simple as that," Leopold said. "It was a mental mistake and it ended up costing us at least the tie and going into overtime."
The goal would have ended a 100-game goal drought for Leopold, including the end of the 2003-04 season and playoffs.
"Second disallowed one of the year so yeah, it's frustrating, but we'll keep working hard and it will happen one of those days," said Leopold, who scored once for the United States at the Turin Olympics.
The Flames pulled within one at 4:19 of the third when Huselius redirected a perfect pass from Regehr past Vokoun during a Calgary power play.
Vokoun finished with 30 saves, including several great stops in the third period.
"That's my job to stop the puck and that's all there is to it," Vokoun said. "Whatever comes at you, you've got to try and deal with and do the best you can."
Notes: Nashville is 21-0-4 when leading after two periods. ... Sullivan's assist on Legwand's first goal was his 500th career point. ... The Predators are 13-10-4-1 overall against the Flames, including four straight victories.
