Rookies Jooris, Gaudreau lead Flames past Canadiens

Sean Farrell  - NHL.com Correspondent | Sunday, 11.02.2014 / 11:32 PM

MONTREAL -- Josh Jooris kept the Calgary Flames on a roll to start their Eastern Conference road trip.

The 24-year-old rookie right wing had his first two-goal game, TJ Brodie had three assists, and Jonas Hiller made 18 saves to lift Calgary to a 6-2 win against the Montreal Canadiens on Sunday.

Jooris, who was left out of the lineup for the Flames' 4-3 win against the Nashville Predators on Friday, snapped a wrist shot past Montreal goalie Carey Price on a power-play breakaway to restore Calgary’s three-goal lead at 8:48 of the third.

"It was obviously a great team win," said Jooris, who has three goals in six games. "We've got a five-game road swing here and we wanted to come out on the right foot here, and it was big. It was a big two points, so it's nice to start the road trip this way."

Johnny Gaudreau assisted on first-period goals by Jooris and Markus Granlund. Curtis Glencross and Mark Giordano each had a goal and an assist, and Lance Bouma also scored for Calgary, which has five points in its past three games, including a 2-1 shootout loss against Montreal on Tuesday.

"I think we're all just doing the little things right and we're all doing our jobs, you know, making little plays, creating offensive chances and playing well in our defensive zone and helping [Hiller] back there," said Gaudreau, who had a small but vocal and enthusiastic cheering section in the upper rows of Bell Centre.

"I had a ton of aunts and uncles and cousins here to come watch me play," Gaudreau said. "They're from Vermont. It's only about an hour-and-a-half trip, so they're really happy for me."

Max Pacioretty scored 37 seconds into the third to draw the Canadiens within 3-1. Hiller, who made his third start in a row, stuck out his left pad to stop Montreal forward Rene Bourque on a breakaway at 5:56 of the third to maintain Calgary's two-goal lead.

"I wasn't too happy with that goal given up early," Hiller said. "It kind of gave them some momentum, so I definitely didn't want to give up a second one."

Jooris scored his second of the game to make it 4-1 nearly three minutes later, and Bouma increased the lead to 5-1 at 11:08.

Lars Eller scored Montreal’s second goal at 13:18. Giordano scored into an empty net at 16:30.

Price stopped 30 of 35 shots for Montreal, which lost for the first time in five games at Bell Centre.

"They're a good team," Canadiens defenseman P.K. Subban said. "We knew that they play with that intensity and that passion in terms of their forecheck and how they play their system, so if you don't counter that, if you're not playing smart with the puck, they're going to hurt you and they did that to us a couple of times tonight.

"So at the end of the day, we have to regroup, get back to the small details of making sure that we're doing the right things within our system. We turn the puck over in tough areas, we lose one-on-one battles, and they're going to make you pay. Good teams make you pay. They're a good team."

The Flames had three players from Switzerland in their lineup, including Hiller, who improved to 5-0-1 in his past six games. Defenseman Raphael Diaz played for the first time in six games, and forward Sven Baertschi made his season debut after he was recalled from Adirondack of the American Hockey League earlier Sunday.

"There is definitely going to be a little more positive press [Monday] in Switzerland, and it's nice," Hiller said. "I think it proves Swiss hockey is kind of on the right track."

Calgary outshot Montreal 35-20, including a 19-4 advantage in the first.

Jooris opened the scoring at 4:58 of the opening period. Price stopped Dennis Wideman's one-timer from the point, but failed to clear the rebound. Jooris snapped up the puck off Price in the goal mouth and moved across the front to shoot past the sprawled Montreal goalie.

"I got out there with Johnny after the power play, and when you're out there with him, it's just a matter of trying to get open because he tends to have the puck a lot, I don't know if you guys have noticed," Jooris said. "So he just made a great play to Wideman, and Wideman's got a pretty hot stick himself, so he put it on net and luckily a rebound was there, and I picked up the garbage."

The Canadiens have allowed the first goal in 10 of 12 games. Their record in those games fell to 6-3-1.

"We're making it hard on ourselves with those starts," Montreal center Tomas Plekanec said. "Obviously when you score first, that's a different story. You have more confidence to play. If you've got to chase the score all the time, then it's not going to happen all the time that you're going to turn it around."

Gaudreau got his second assist with a pass to Jiri Hudler, whose shot struck Granlund's skate on its way past Price to put Calgary up 2-0 with 26.5 seconds left in the first.

Gaudreau has five points during a three-game point streak, including a goal and an assist Friday. He has eight points in seven games since he was left out of the lineup for Calgary's 3-2 loss at the Columbus Blue Jackets on Oct. 17.

Glencross made it 3-0 at 17:53 of the second when he deflected Brodie's point shot past Price for his second goal.

Calgary continues its five-game road trip Tuesday against the Washington Capitals. Montreal hosts the Chicago Blackhawks on Tuesday.
