WASHINGTON, DC -- The Calgary Flames put forth a strong effort in Washington on Tuesday night but fell 3-1 to the Capitals.

Penalities cost the Flames the game as they allowed goals on their first two infractions.

Calgary's power play was also ineffective. They were unable to capitalize on any of their four opportunities with the man advantage.

The Flames fell behind at 1:11 of the first period due to an Ovechkin power play marker

With Rene Bourque sitting in the sin bin for holding up Dennis Wideman, the Capitals potent power play burst into the zone and Marcus Johansson sent a perfect pass over to a waiting Ovechkin.

The Washington captain went for his patented one-timer and it flew past Kiprusoff, giving Ovechkin his 17th goal of the year.

The Capitals kept it coming in the middle stanza, scoring on their second power play goal of the night. Ovechkin sent a hard shot on net from the blueline and Troy Brouwer was able to collect the rebound in the goal mouth and slip it past Kiprusoff.

Curtis Glencross was able to cut the Capitals lead in half at 13:51 when Iginla fed him from behind the net and he slide the puck just past Voukon's pad. The winger now has 16 goals this season.

TJ Brodie also assisted on the Flames first goal of the evening.

Washington notched a late goal in the second period when Dennis Wideman capitalized on a defensive lapse and scored his seventh of the year.
