CALGARY, AB -- The Calgary Flames sent 41 shots at Minnesota Wild netminder Niklas Backstrom but their inability to convert on the power play resulted in a 3-0 loss to their divisional rivals.

The Flames had 17:00 of power play time but they couldn't manage to generate any offence fromthose opportunities. The team has the worst power play at home in the NHL, scoring on two of their 34 chances. That equates to a 5.9 percent success rate.

Despite being outshot 15-5 in the opening 20:00, the Wild managed to close out the first frame with a 1-0 lead over the Calgary Flames thanks to a lucky bounce.

Winger Nick Johnson carried the puck up the sideboards and, when he realized he had no one to dish it off to, opted to wire a shot on Miikka Kiprusoff. Darroll Powe had rushed into the slot and the puck was deflected off his skate and over the netminder's pads. The even strength tally came at 5:35 with the lone assist going to Johnson.

The Flames continued to pour on the pressure after going down by a goal and drew the lone minor penalty called in the stanza but Backstrom stood tall under the siege, keeping his team in the lead through twenty minutes of play.

Dany Heatley gave his club a two-goal cushion at 12:47 in the second period after a great passing sequence between himself, Mikko Koivu and Marek Zidlicky. The Flames were unable to continue the trio as they dished the puck back and forth in front of Kiprusoff and Heatley was able to sent a quick shot past the netminder from close-range.

Jarome Iginla dropped the gloves late in the period after exchanging words with Johnson. The two forwards went at it furiously and the Wild forward head-butted Iginla during the battle. Johnson was handed a major penalty for head-butting and a game misconduct after the two were pulled apart.

Calgary wasn't able to generate any offence in the third period despite landing 14 shots on net and earning two power plays. The Wild were able to capitalize on one of their chances as Guillaume Latendresse added a third Minnesota goal at 19:22.

The Wild have now won five consecutive games. The victory marked Backstrom's 23rd career shutout and his frst this year.
