While Matt DeBlouw has offensive upside to his game, his greatest strength is his play behind the puck. Known for his defensive prowess, he is counted on by coaches to quell the opposition’s top lines on a nightly basis.
DeBlouw is extremely adept at reading plays and reacting in a poised, intelligent manner. His steady demeanor provides a calming presence on and off the ice, making him a leader. He is also a great skater, allowing him to keep pace with those he is defending against.
At the 2012 NHL Combine, DeBlouw turned quite a few heads when he scored in the top 10 in several fitness tests. His personal best came in the Wingate bike test – which measures anaerobic fitness - in which he placed second overall, trailing just behind third overall pick Alex Galchenyuk.
