One of the biggest surprises during the 2011-12 Flames training camp was the emergence of Roman Horak. Acquired in the trade that sent Tim Erixon’s rights to the New York Rangers, Horak was expected to spend his first professional season honing his skills in Abbotsford. It didn’t go that way.

Horak ended up playing 61 games with the Flames during the 2011-12 campaign, netting three goals and 11 points in the process.

During his tenure with the Chilliwack Bruins in the WHL, Horak was fellow Flames prospect Ryan Howse’s set-up man. He managed 52 helpers in 64 games with the Bruins in 2010-11, a direct result of his puck distribution skills. That offensive prowess could be seen during his time in Calgary but the coaching staff focused on developing his all-around game to ensure he was a responsible player in all three zones at the pro level.
