Calgary grade 6 students receive YMCA memberships from the Flames Foundation
The YMCA and the Flames Foundation for Life are offering free YMCA memberships to every Calgary grade 6 student

CALGARY, AB -- Starting yesterday, Grade 6 students in Calgary can receive a free YMCA membership thanks to a new partnership between the Flames Foundation for Life and YMCA Calgary. The Calgary Flames YMCA Grade 6 Memberships allow youth access to all YMCA Calgary locations and to special Calgary Flames sponsored activities to inspire them to live healthier, more active lives.

Parents of youth entering Grade 6 in a Calgary school can bring proof of their child’s grade to any YMCA Calgary location to sign them up for their free Grade 6 membership. The memberships are valid for the student’s Grade 6 year – until August 31, 2015.

Grade 6 is a time of transition for many young people as they age out of traditional care models and transition into junior high. It is a time of decision-making and the Flames Foundation for Life and YMCA Calgary want to help young Calgarians make positive choices.

“Providing this opportunity to our city’s youth is a big step in making a positive impact on youth wellness,” said Helene Weir, President and CEO, YMCA Calgary. “The YMCA is a place for youth to learn new skills, have fun, and feel safe. It’s all about helping youth find a positive place to belong in our community.”

“This is a unique opportunity for students and we want all grade sixers in Calgary to take advantage of the free membership program,” said Ken King, Calgary Flames President and CEO. “This is a step towards making Calgary’s youth healthier and to positively impact the way kids make decisions.”

“The YMCA is fun. There’s lots of activities I can do. We can be active and make our bodies strong,” says Jaswanth Gangavarapu, an 11-year-old YMCA member who is going into Grade 6. He is involved in swimming, Adventurers (leadership training), Steve Nash Basketball, Art in the City, and YMCA Day Camps. “It’s awesome. I’m gonna tell my friends.”
