Mason McDonald: What Scouts Say

INTERNATIONAL SCOUTING SERVICES

McDonald has great upside, but is still very raw. His development this year was slowed due to limited ice time backing up 19 year old Jake Brennan in Bathurst. After being traded to Charlottetown, his overall play and confidence showed great improvement in a very short time. His play helped carry the Islanders into the playoffs. His performance against Halifax in the first round play-off loss play was outstanding. He finished his season with a MVP performance, playing all but one of Team Canada’s games at the IIHF World U18 Championships in route to a bronze medal.

ISS Scout Cocker: “McDonald was the backbone and leader of the defensive zone for Canada at U-18. Calm, relaxed and controlled between the pipes ... everything he does is with precision and a calm demeanor."

RED LINE REPORT

Netminder has outstanding physical tools with great length and a really long wingspan. Also has very good flexibility and athleticism for a big, gangly kid. Comes out aggressively and uses size to cut down angles - doesn’t give shooters much to look at. Moves well laterally on wrap-around attempts, getting good push off either blade. Sharp glove. Handles puck around the net like a pro, stopping hard shoot-arounds and making quick outlets. Communicates well with his d-men. Hardly played during the season’s first half while he was backing-up a 19 year-old. Confidence and technique both improved once he gained icetime - was quieter in net and did a better job squaring up to shooters and playing angles. Still tries to do too much at times, particularly with his puckhandling. Tends to lose concentration when he’s not seeing many shots and still goes down a bit early, but these are correctable issues.

Projection: Solid #1 goalie with patient development.
