Flames Foundation & HEROS launch new Calgary program
Hockey Education Reaching Out Society (HEROS) and the Calgary Flames Foundation for Life are pleased to announce a multi-year partnership that will result in a new HEROS program in the Bowness neighbourhood of Calgary. The partnership will result in free hockey programming that teaches life skills to over 35 children annually.

CALGARY, AB -- Hockey Education Reaching Out Society (HEROS) and the Calgary Flames Foundation for Life are pleased to announce a multi-year partnership that will result in a new HEROS program in the Bowness neighbourhood of Calgary. The partnership will result in free hockey programming that teaches life skills to over 35 children annually.

“We are thrilled about this partnership. Both the Calgary Flames and the Flames Foundation for Life have been great supporters of HEROS since weekly first opened programs here in 2006,” says Norm Flynn, Founder and Executive Director of HEROS. “A great example of our impact is a recent graduate who was just named the first Canadian recipient of the NHL/Thurgood Marshall Academic Scholarship. Our program engages, educates and inspires. With this partnership with the Flames Foundation, we are able to offer it to more young people in Calgary building off of our success in Forest Lawn.”

“When the Flames ownership brought the Flames to Calgary over 30 years ago one of the first things they did was create the Flames Foundation for Life, with the purpose of improving the lives of Southern Albertans as well as to ensure the growth of the game of hockey and it’s accessibility,” says Ken King, President and CEO of the Calgary Flames and the Flames Foundation for Life. “The HEROS program uses hockey as a learning tool for life for the young people enrolled and we are proud supporters of the sport’s power to change lives.”

The three year partnership will fully fund the new HEROS program in Bowness, a neighbourhood that sees a high concentration of young people living at or below the National Low Income Cut-off who face a number of social challenges daily. HEROS will provide weekly programming to children in Grades 4-7. This program will connect participants with mentors who will support and assist the growth of their self-esteem, self-concept, and ability to succeed in the home, school, and community.
