World Championship Update: 19.05.14
Mikael Backlund and Sweden concluded their portion of the round robin on a winning note Monday.

CALGARY, AB -- Mikael Backlund and Sweden concluded their round robin portion of the 2014 IIHF World Championship on a winning note after downing Italy 5-1 on Monday.

Though he was held pointless against Italy, Backlund had a strong showing in the round robin, finishing with four goals and assist with a plus-3 rating and a team-leading 29 shots while averaging 17:12 of ice time per game -- tops among forwards.

The Swedes currently sit in first place in Group A. Only a win in regulation from Canada can prevent them from finishing atop the group.

Sean Monahan and Canada wraps up the round robin portion of their schedule Tuesday against Norway. Johnny Gaudreau and the United States will face Germany and Jiri Hudler and the Czech Republic will square off against France to determine their seeding moving forward.
