World Championship Update: 16.05.14
Johnny Gaudreau recorded two assists, including one on the overtime winner, to help lift Team USA over Kazakhstan

CALGARY, AB -- Johnny Hockey has struck again.

Calgary Flames prospect Johnny Gaudreau recorded a pair of assists -- including one on Seth Jones’ overtime winner -- to help lift the United States to a 4-3 victory over Kazakhstan at the 2014 IIHF World Championship on Friday.

Gaudreau now has one goal and six points in five games, tying him for ninth overall in tournament scoring.

The 20-year-old recorded a primary assist on Matt Donovan’s first goal of the tournament at 35:02 to pull the US ahead 3-2. After Kazakhstan’s Roman Starchenko tied the game late in the third, Gaudreau recorded his second helper on Jones’ winner just 1:05 into the extra frame.

Gaudreau wasn’t the only Flames property to contribute to a game-winning goal Friday. Mikael Backlund’s goal with 11 seconds remaining in the first period held up as the clincher as Sweden downed Slovakia 3-1.

The goal, his fourth, moves Backlund into a tie for second in tournament scoring alongside Ladislav Nagy (SVK), Joel Ward (CAN), Viktor Tikhonov (RUS), Thomas Oppenheimer (GER) and Sergei Plotnikov (RUS). Cody Hodgson (CAN) leads the tournament in goals with six through his first five games.

Sean Monahan recorded one shot in 3:23 of action in Canada’s 6-1 win over Italy.

Jiri Hudler and the Czech Republic were idle Friday.
