World Championship Update: 11.05.14
Backlund assisted on Oscar Moller’s first period goal to tie the game 1-1 while Hudler’s goal with 25 seconds remaining in the opening frame temporarily restored his team's lead. The Czechs, however, couldn’t hold on thanks in part to Backlund's second period goal, his third of the tournament.
Sweden eventually prevailed 4-3 in a shootout.
Backlund, who had two goals in his tournament opener, led all Swedish forwards with 18:26 of ice and finished with one shot on goal. He served as Sweden’s first shootout attempt but couldn’t beat Czech goaltender Alexander Salak.
Hudler managed three shots, with one finding the back of the net for his first goal of the tournament, in 18:41 of action.
Canada and Sean Monahan and the United States and Johnny Gaudreau were inactive Sunday. Sven Baertschi was forced to withdraw from the tournament after suffering a cracked rib in Switzerland’s tournament opener Friday.
