Abbotsford falls to Texas on Sunday afternoon
ABBOTSFORD, BC -- The Abbotsford Heat fell to the Texas Stars (AHL affiliate of the Dallas Stars) 7-2 on Sunday night at the Abbotsford Entertainment and Sports Centre (AESC). The Heat remain in first place in the Western Conference with a 31-14-3-1 record and 66 points.
Texas took the early lead with a goal by Colton Sceviour at 0:53 in the first period. Reinhart came back with a goal at 11:19, assisted by Corban Knight and Granlund. The first period in a 1-1 tie.
O’Brien delivered early in the second period with his first AHL goal of the season. O’Brien’s goal was scored shorthanded at 2:14, assisted by Granlund. The Stars quickly evened the score with a power play goal by Brett Ritchie at 3:30. Scott Glennie scored back to back goals to put the Stars back in the lead at 8:00 and 10:53. Following Glennie’s goals, Olivier Roy was pulled in favour of Joni Ortio. Jyrki Jokipakka furthered the Stars’ lead with a goal at 11:20. At 13:33 Mike Hedden added another Texas goal and Sceviour quickly netted his second goal of the night at 13:55. The Stars scored six consecutive goals against the Heat to end the second period.
Both teams were scoreless in the third period, with the Stars outshooting the Heat 41 to 35 through 60 minutes of play.
Abbotsford was zero for five on the power play and killed off three of the Stars six man advantages.
Roy made 20 of 24 saves before being relieved by Ortio who stopped 14 of 17 shots. Opposing goalie Christopher Nilstorp stopped 33 out of 35 shots.
The Heat now have a welcome rest for the AHL All-Star break before embarking on a five-game road trip. While on the road, the Heat will take on the Charlotte Checkers, the Milwaukee Admirals, and the Chicago Wolves. The Heat will be back in action on home ice on February 29th and March 1st, taking on the Grand Rapids Griffins.
