Inside The Game: Flames vs. Blackhawks
GAME IN A MINUTE
CALGARY, AB -- The Calgary Flames continue to roll on home ice.
The Flames won their third straight to start a five-game homestand after TJ Brodie’s wraparound with 2:34 remaining in overtime beat Corey Crawford to help lift Calgary to a 5-4 victory at Scotiabank Saddledome on Tuesday.
The Flames, who had lost seven straight on ‘Dome ice, have turned their home woes around 180 degrees and extended Chicago’s winless drought to a season-high four games in the process.
Calgary went to work early to keep both streaks going.
After Patrick Kane tied the game four-and-a-half minutes later, Lance Bouma added his third in six games, wristing a shot that handcuffed Raanta before skipping over the Chicago goaltender and into the net at 11:34.
Again, the Blackhawks countered after Marian Hossa’s first of two on the night to tie the game 2-2 with 3:25 remaining in the first period.
Matt Stajan and Backlund, with his second of the game, put Calgary up 4-2 by the midway mark of the period to chase Raanta from the game after just 15 shots.
Both Crawford and Ramo kept the game tied 4-4 through the third period, forcing Brodie’s overtime heroics.
GOAL OF THE GAME
After Stempniak picked off a neutral zone pass from Hjalmarsson, he fed Backlund who quickly kicked the puck back before taking the return feed and busting in on Raanta, beating the Blackhawks goaltender just 1:33 into the contest.
SAVE OF THE GAME
Tied 4-4 in the dying seconds of the second period, Michal Rozsival struck iron with his blast from the point. Down but not out, Berra swept the puck out from behind him with his paddle before Jonathan Toews could put the Blackhawks up by one.
Brodie’s OT marker with 2:34 remaining propelled the Flames to a 5-4 OT victory over the Blackhawks.
STAT OF THE GAME
After scoring just three goals in his first 86 games of his career, Bouma has three in his past six games after his first period marker.
The Flames close out January at home against the San Jose Sharks (7 p.m. MST, Sportsnet West, Sportsnet 960 The Fan).
