Inside The Game: Flames vs. Blues
Go inside Calgary\'s 5-0 setback against the St. Louis Blues

GAME IN A MINUTE

CALGARY, AB -- St. Louis left the Calgary Flames feeling blue.

The Blues got goals from five different players while Jaroslav Halak stopped 33 shots to shut out the Flames 5-0 at Scotiabank Saddledome on Thursday night.

It’s the fifth time in the past seven games the Flames have failed to put the puck in the net.

The Blues, however, had no problem doing so against the team that handed them their last loss -- a 4-3 shootout setback in Calgary on Dec. 23. Since then, St. Louis has rattled off seven consecutive victories, their longest winning streak since their run from Oct. 15 to Nov. 5, 2002.

The Flames have won just once since their comeback victory over the Blues and have scored just five goals since.

It didn’t take long for the Blues to find the right track.

Goals 125 seconds apart near the midway mark of the first period from Chris Stewart and Vladimir Sobotka quickly staked St. Louis to a 2-0 lead.

The Blues extended that lead to three after Ian Cole inched down from the point, corralled a pass from Vladimir Tarasenko and buried it behind Karri Ramo at 6:47 of the second period.

A pair of power play goals early in the third gave St. Louis some space. Alex Pietrangelo bounced another by Ramo 1:16 into the final frame while Tarasenko added his 15th of the year 1:16 later.

From there, Halak slammed the door, making 12 saves in the third to ensure his third shutout of the year.

SAVE OF THE GAME

Trailing 1-0 after Stewart’s goal at 9:32, Ramo blockered away another attempt from the Blues forward just 42 seconds later to temporarily keep the game at a 1-0 score.

TURNING POINT

Two goals in two minutes sandwiched around the midway mark of the first period proved to be too much for Calgary’s offense to overcome over the final 49 minutes of their contest against the Blues.

QUOTE OF THE GAME

“I don't think anybody in this room is happy about the results we're having lately. We've gotta try to find a way to get out of this funk ... I mean, we're working hard, but the results just aren't there. We have to find a way to battle through this and stick together and make sure there's no negative thoughts in here.”

-Lance Bouma

STAT OF THE GAME

Jiri Hudler had a season-high six of Calgary’s 33 shots against the Blues, which doesn't include the post he hit early in the second period.

LINEUP NOTES

Derek Smith and David Jones (eye) were scratched against the Blues. Curtis Glencross (high ankle sprain), Kris Russell (MCL sprain) and Blair Jones (meniscal tear) also missed the game.

COMING UP

The Flames host Sochi-bound Sidney Crosby and the Pittsburgh Penguins at Scotiabank Saddledome on Saturday (8 p.m. MT, CBC).
