Heat Three Stars Of The Week: 05.01.14
Max Reinhart, Sven Baertschi and Adrian Foster rank as CalgaryFlames.com's Heat Three Stars Of The Week
CALGARY, AB -- The Abbotsford Heat didn't get off to the start they wanted to in 2014, falling twice to the Hamilton Bulldogs in a two-game set this past weekend.
On Friday, they were edged 2-1 thanks to an incredible game from Hamilton netminder Dustin Tokarski, who was named the game's first star. Sven Baertschi scored the Heat's lone goal in the game with Mark Cundari and Adrian Foster assisting. Joni Ortio made 20 saves in the loss.
On Saturday, Markus Granlund opened the scoring with his 14th goal of the season but Gabriel Dumont scored in the second and third periods, giving his team the lead. The Heat were unable to notch the equalizer and Maxime Macenauer's empty-netter secured the win for Hamilton. Joey MacDonald got the nod in net, making 25 saves.
Here are CalgaryFlames.com's Three Stars Of The Week:
FIRST STAR - MAX REINHART
QUICK NUMBERS: 1 assist, 6 shots on net, 0 PIM
Max Reinhart has been a steady, dependable forward for head coach Troy G. Ward throughout the season and he continued that kind of consistent play in the first two games of the new year. He threw three shots on net in both games against the Hamilton Bulldogs, assisted on Granlund's goal on Saturday night and was defensively responsible. Reinhart has been playing on the Heat's top line with Ben Street and Josh Jooris.
SECOND STAR - SVEN BAERTSCHI
QUICK NUMBERS: 1 goal, 2 shots on net, 0 PIM
Sven Baertschi's first few games with the Heat this season were a trial-and-error process as the Swiss winger got acclimatized to the AHL but he looks like he has settled in. Baertschi scored his second goal of the year on Friday night, tapping in a back-door pass from Cundari.
"It's important for us to get him going," Troy G. Ward said after Friday's game. "He has a little bit more of a focus to him, because he dropped down from the NHL and at one particular time, maybe not too long ago, he was – and maybe still is in a lot of ways – the eyes of the franchise moving forward. It's important that he score goals."
THIRD STAR - ADRIAN FOSTER
QUICK NUMBERS: 2 games, 1 assist, 1 shot on net
The veteran forward played his first two games in Heat silks and showed the hunger and drive Ward spoke about earlier this week.
"The biggest thing, when we lost Granlund the other day (Calgary recall), when we started looking at replacements was somebody that, it's the same philosophy that I had in college, you recruit people that are hungry. You don't necessarily recruit the best players, you recruit people that are hungry. So I wanted to bring in a guy that I thought was humble and really wanted to prove himself."
He earned the secondary assist on Baertschi's goal on Friday and has been playing on a line with the Swiss forward and Granlund.
