CALGARY, AB -- Emile Poirier is ringing in the New Year with an NHL contract.

The Calgary Flames announced Tuesday that Poirier, selected 22nd overall in the 2013 NHL Draft, has signed a three year, entry-level contract.

“I think it’s great,” Poirier told CalgaryFlames.com. “I’ve been working my whole career to get that contract. I’ve been working hard. I think signing this contract means a lot for me. For my family it means a lot. I’ve worked hard for that and am extremely proud to sign it.”

The 19-year-old Gatineau Olympiques standout will earn an NHL base salary of $832,500 with a signing bonus of $92,500 each year and an AHL salary of $70,000 per year. His contract has an average annual value of $925,000.

He’s earned it.

Poirier’s enjoyed an incredible start in this third season in Gatineau. The 6-foot-1, 184-pound winger sits seventh in QMJHL scoring with 24 goals and 53 points in 36 games.

“At this time last year, I didn’t know I would sign my contract in one year,” he said. “I’ve just kept working hard and this 2013 year I’ve worked hard and now I’m getting paid off for that work.

“We have a good team here, a good group of guys. I think I’m just focusing on my play and working hard with good coaches and working out hard.”

Poirier is the fourth member of the 2013 NHL Draft class to sign with the Flames, joining fellow first round picks Sean Monahan (No. 6) and Morgan Klimchuk (No. 28) as well as Keegan Kanzig, who was selected in the third round, 67th overall.

“I think it’s awesome,” he said. “I’ve been waiting for this day. I was waiting for that day and am extremely proud to join that group of guys. It’s great.”

As for his plan moving forward, Poirier has but one resolution on New Year’s Eve.

Continue to push towards his dream.

“I’m just going to keep focusing on my goal to play in the NHL,” he said. “It’s been my number one goal since I was a kid and I continue to dream about it.”
