Inside The Game: Flames vs. Red Wings
Go inside Calgary\'s 4-3 loss to the Detroit Red Wings on Friday night.

Datsyuk, Red Wings douse Flames

CALGARY, AB -- The Calgary Flames stopped Alex Ovechkin and Phil Kessel in back-to-back outings. They couldn’t add Pavel Datsyuk to the list.

Datsyuk had a goal and an assist while Jimmy Howard made 19 saves as the Detroit Red Wings topped the Flames 4-3 at Scotiabank Saddledome on Friday night.

Datsyuk opened the scoring at the midway mark of the first period, burying a Jakub Kindl rebound behind Joey MacDonald to give Detroit a 1-0 lead. Seven minutes later, he then worked the puck to former Flames forward Todd Bertuzzi, who spotted Henrik Zetterberg just off the far post for a tap-in to make it 2-0.

The Flames responded in the second.

After Chris Butler’s slapper pulled the Flames within one at 10:15, Mike Cammalleri fished a dump-in off the boards, spun and fired the puck onto the stick of Sean Monahan, who made no mistake in roofing his team-leading seventh of the season over Howard’s glove to tie the game 2-2 at 12:47. The goal prompted a time-out from Red Wings coach Mike Babcock.

Detroit answered back just 1:25 into the third.

Firing a sharp-angled shot from the corner, Joakim Andersson’s centering feed nicked the skate of Tomas Tatar and eluded MacDonald to give the Red Wings a 3-2 edge.

That lead was extended to two by Justin Abdelkader at 16:36. Abdelkader worked his way out from behind the net and launched another sharp-angled shot over MacDonald’s glove to make it 4-2.

Curtis Glencross, with his fourth of the season, drew the Flames back to within one with 9.8 seconds remaining but Calgary couldn’t tack on another to tie.

GOAL OF THE GAME

Taking a pass from Cammalleri, Monahan fired his seventh of the season behind Howard, beating the Red Wings goaltender high over the glove at 12:47 to temporarily tie the game 2-2.

SAVE OF THE GAME

After kicking out the pad to deny Zetterberg’s point shot, MacDonald flashed the same pad again to take away Bertuzzi’s rebound attempt with 5:35 remaining in the second period.

TURNING POINT

Tatar’s goal just 1:25 into the third period didn’t serve as the game-winner, but swung momentum in Detroit’s favor in the final frame.

QUOTE OF THE GAME

“Goalie makes a mistake, it goes in the net. Guys make lots of mistakes on the ice but once we make one, everybody knows. It's one of those things, I've got to stop it but 99 times out of 100 you stop them.”

-MacDonald

STAT OF THE GAME

With an assist on Monahan’s goal, Cammalleri collected the 250th assist of his career.

LINEUP NOTES

Tim Jackman was a healthy scratch for Calgary. Both Lee Stempniak (lower body) and Christopher Breen (abdominal wall strain) both missed the game due to injury and have been placed on the injured reserve.

COMING UP

The Flames leave Calgary to play four games on the road, starting Sunday against the Chicago Blackhawks (5:30 p.m. MT, SNET-W).
