Flames Today: 27.09.13
The Calgary Flames are close to finalizing their 23-man roster, but still need to determine their plan of action in net.

FLAMES ROSTER CLOSE TO FINAL

Coach Bob Hartley has made some decisions as to who will comprise the 2013-14 Calgary Flames.

There’s still more to be made, too.

Needing to get from the 28 players remaining in camp down to a 23-man roster by 5 p.m. ET on Monday, Hartley, his coaching staff and Flames management are in the final stages of determining an opening day lineup.

“We fall in love pretty quickly as coaches but at the same time, there’s contracts, there’s all kinds of situations,” Hartley said. “I had a meeting with Jay, I talked a few times with Brian Burke, I talked with my partners.

“We’re not set yet with our 23. Obviously we’re not set yet on our No. 1 goalie or our No. 2 goalie. We want to make sure that we watch those guys. We watch those guys in meetings. We watch them on the ice. We watch them in the gym. We do video with them and then we go back on the ice the next day with a certain drill that will tell us if they get it or not.”

Meaning the next four days are make-or-break for several players trying to crack the lineup.

“I’m still here,” Roman Horak said. “I still get a chance to make the team but there’s still 16 forwards. They’ve got to cut another two or three guys.

“I’ve just got to do the little things; be on time, be good in practice and do everything right. The decision is on the coaches. You have to do the little things and just wait.”

GOALIES CONTINUE ROTATION

Not settled with his goaltending, Hartley has a couple of decisions to make between the pipes.

He’s already made one.

“I don’t want three goalies,” he said.

With no firm decision on his goaltenders, Hartley’s forced to rotate Joey MacDonald, Reto Berra and Karri Ramo between nets in practice as the team makes final evaluations in the crease.

“It’s a nightmare,” he said. “It’s a nightmare but that’s what we have. There’s not much we can do. We try to evaluate them as much as we can. It’s like having three students sitting in the same desk.”

For MacDonald, splitting time with two other goaltenders simply is what it is.

“You just do what you do,” he said. “You go out, prepare yourself to give yourself the best opportunity out on the ice. It’s tough when you have three goalies on the ice. When you get out there you just have to do your thing and not change anything.”

HUDLER BACK, BAERTSCHI SIDELINED

Though Jiri Hudler has returned to action, Sven Baertschi has joined the list of players currently sidelined due to injury.

“Sven is injured, lower-body,” Hartley confirmed. “He should be a couple of days we think. It’s minor.”

The team remains without Mike Cammalleri. The Flames coach has no plans to get the 31-year-old into action until he's ready.

“It would be nice but we’re not going to put him on the ice until he’s okay,” Hartley said. “There’s no sense. It’s a nagging injury and if we don’t fix it right away, he’s going to play with this all year. We need Cammy at his best and we’ll take the time that he needs.

“I’m anxious to see him but the medical staff is on top of it. I always listen to those guys. When they give me the green light on a player on the ice, he’s going to be on the ice. Until then, we’re not going to gamble.”
