Post-Game Report: Flames 5, Oilers 2

PENTICTON, BC -- The Calgary Flames prospects took to the ice for the 2013 Young Stars contest at the South Okanagan Events Centre in Penticton, BC, and out-shot their provincial rivals 17-4 in the first stanza on route to a convincing 5-2 victory on Thursday.

"Our team played so well. We were on them. On the forecheck, we were relentless," Vancouver, BC native Max Reinhart said afterwards. "We didn't have a whole lot of d-zone time and I think every forward thrives off of that ... I expect us to keep this momentum going."

Reinhart opened the scoring for Calgary finishing off a series of passes near the goal-mouth to give the Flames prospects an early lead. Markus Granlund would then add a pair of markers, just over two minutes apart, to give the Flames a three goal cushion after the opening frame.

The Oilers would answer back in the second with goals from Jujhar Khaira and Travis Ewanyk to cut the Flames lead to a goal. The goals came shortly after Calgary's hulking blueliner Keegan Kanzig dropped the mits with Ty Bilke in a spirited tilt which would set the tone for the final period.

The Flames struck twice in the third period with tallies from a pair of 2013 first round draft selections, Sean Monahan and Emile Poirier. The two played on a line together and developed great chemistry as the game wore on.

"He's a good player and he's smart," Monahan said of Poirier. "He's easy to play with. It was fun to play with him."

Laurent Brossoit, a product of the 2011 NHL Draft, turned aside 17 Oilers shots for the victory. Tyler Bunz stopped 27 shots in goal for Edmonton.

Despite having just a single practice under their belts before the game, the Flames were an incredibly cohesive group right from the drop of the puck.

"This is the first time we've all played together as a group," Reinhart said of the how well the team clicked. "I guess that just speaks volumes to the character in that room. Everyone bought into the one practice of the system and obviously, I think we executed pretty well tonight."

The Flames prospects will get back at it on Friday night at 8:30 MST with a match against the host Vancouver Canucks. The game will be streamed live on calgaryflames.com.
