CALGARYFLAMES.COM THREE PLAYERS TO WATCH

Mirco Mueller

MIRCO MUELLER - DEFENCEMAN: The Swiss blueliner saw his draft stock rise throughout the 2012-13 campaign - his first season in the WHL, playing for the Everett Silvertips - and ended up being selected 18th overall by the San Jose Sharks.

One of the reasons Mueller was a draft riser is his skating ability. He is a big man at 6-foot-3 and 185-pounds but is a fluid skater with excellent mobility and speed. The rearguard is agile on his feet as well, maneuvering easily to close gaps or box out an opponent.

The blueliner also reads the game extremely well. He makes responsible, mature plays with or without the puck and can slow the game down when needed. Mueller's poise and hockey sense comes in handy in all three zones; he can shut down opponents in his own end thanks to his ability to read plays as they're developing, his gap control comes in handy in the neutral zone and his long stretch passes can generate scoring opportunities for forwards.

Tomas Hertl

TOMAS HERTL - FORWARD: After an exceptional season with HC Slavia Praha in the Czech Extraliga league, Hertl looks like he is ready to play pro in North America. He led HC Slavia Praha in scoring last year with 18 goals and 30 points in 43 games and the Sharks, liking what they saw from their 2012 first round draft pick, inked him to three-year entry-level deal on June 4.

While his offensive prowess is something opponents must take note of, Hertl is a strong backchecker and defensively responsible. He uses his size to keep forecheckers at bay and will try to grind out his opponents along the boards. Coaches have used Hertl as a penalty killer in the past as he shows great instincts in his own end.

The Praha, CZE product was selected 17th overall in the 2012 NHL Draft.

Matthew Nieto

MATTHEW NIETO - FORWARD: The Long Beach, CA product is about to enter his first full professional season and the Young Stars Classic will be the perfect opportunity to show both the San Jose and Worcester Sharks coaching staff members he is ready for the next level.

Nieto spent the last three seasons in Hockey East with Boston University, developing into a top-six forward for the Terriers. He rattled off 18 goals and 37 points in 39 games last year, good for 9th amongst all Hockey East skaters. Feeling he was ready to move on from his collegiate career, he signed an entry-level deal with the Sharks after his season had concluded and ended up playing 11 games in Worcester at the end of the year, scoring 6 points.

The 20 year-old has great wheels and can leave his opposition in the dust when he hits top speed. Nieto has a quick release, is creative with the puck and is very opportunistic in the offensive zone.
