2013 Young Stars Classic: Vancouver Canucks

CALGARYFLAMES.COM THREE PLAYERS TO WATCH

Nicklas Jensen

NIKLAS JENSEN - FORWARD: The 2013 Young Stars Classic will be Jensen's first step in earning a full-time job with the Canucks this season and there is no doubt the skilled winger will be firing on all cylinders at the tournament.

The 20 year-old is very gifted offensively. He has a very quick, accurate shot that allows him to be a goal scorer but he also can thrive as a playmaker thanks to good hockey sense and passing skills. At 6-foot-2 and 202-pounds, he uses his frame very well when it comes to protecting the puck. He has good core strength and isn't thrown off the puck easily.

After spending two seasons in the OHL with the Oshawa Generals, Jensen turned pro last year, skating with AIK in the Swedish Elite League (17 goals, 23 points in 50 games), the Chicago Wolves in the AHL (2 goals, 4 points in 20 games) and had a two-game cup of coffee with the Canucks.

Hunter Shinkaruk

HUNTER SHINKARUK - FORWARD: Shinkaruk may be undersized at 5-foot-10 and 181-pounds but his stature hasn't stopped him from piling up the points in the WHL. The Medicine Hat Tigers have benefited greatly from the Calgary product's offensive acumen; Shinkaruk has racked up 219 points in 193 games over the past three years.

That kind of production is a result of Shinkaruk's high-end skill - he has incredibly quick hands, a sniper's shot and has great wheels that allow him to maneuver around the offensive zone with ease. He is very creative with the puck and has the ability to generate a plethora of scoring opportunities for both himself and his linemates. Shinkaruk has been lauded on numerous occasions for his work ethic and hustle; he won't shy away from battling against much bigger opponents.

The Canucks selected Shinkaruk 24th overall in the 2013 NHL Draft.

Jordan Subban

JORDAN SUBBAN - DEFENCEMAN: If the Canucks are going to generate offence from their backend, you can bet Subban will play a big part in it. The youngest Subban brother is offensive defenceman, posting 15 goals and 51 points in 68 games with the Belleville Bulls last year - good for 6th amongst defencemen in the OHL.

The 18 year-old is a strong skater who hits top speed in a few strides, making it very easy for him to leap into the rush when he sees an opening. Also aiding in his offensive game is his shot. Subban possesses a heavy, hard shot but he also has quick hands - he can snap off a howitzer in no time, handcuffing a netminder. He is working on shoring up his defensive game, an area some scouts questioned heading into the draft, but has a good work ethic and is dedicated to becoming a better all-around blueliner.

Subban was selected by the Canucks in the 4th round (115th overall) of the 2013 NHL Draft.
