2013 Young Stars Classic: Calgary Flames

CALGARYFLAMES.COM THREE PLAYERS TO WATCH

Sean Monahan

SEAN MONAHAN - FORWARD: There will be plenty of eyes on the Flames 2013 first round pick at the Young Stars Classic and for good reason. Monahan is exceptionally talented and will be an absolute pain for opponents to defend against.

Smart, skilled and creative, Monahan has all the tools to become an impact player in the NHL. He thinks the game at a high level, has excellent instincts, is defensively responsible, is an excellent skater and is a leader amongst his teammates. Despite being one of the youngest players at the Flames development camp in July, he stood out in practices and in scrimmages as one of the best players on the ice.

The Flames inked the pivot to a three-year entry-level deal earlier this summer. He has the opportunity to land a spot in Calgary this year or will head back to Ottawa to play with the 67's in the OHL.

Ryan Culkin

RYAN CULKIN - DEFENCEMAN: After an impressive season with the Quebec Remparts in the QMJHL and turning heads at the Flames 2013 development camp, general manager Jay Feaster has pegged Culkin as a candidate to make the jump to the pro ranks this year. The Young Stars Classic is the next step in his quest to turn pro and there is no doubt he will want to put forth his best performance at the tournament.

Culkin is a strong skating two-way defenceman who has put up solid numbers in the QMJHL. Last season, he led all Rempart blueliners in scoring with 5 goals and 45 points through 67 games. He has good hockey sense and is sound positionally. Culkin has been very diligent with his off-ice training regimen, putting on close to 10-pounds of muscle over the last year, and is now better equipped to defend against larger opponents.

The Flames selected the Montreal, QC product in the 5th round of the 2012 NHL Draft.

Markus Granlund

MARKUS GRANLUND - FORWARD: When asked which prospect he would be keeping a close eye on at the Young Stars Classic, Jay Feaster singled out Granlund. The centreman is coming off a stellar showing at the Flames development camp and is expected to play in North America this season after spending the last two years with HIFK Helsinki in Finland.

The Oulu, FIN native is an adept playmaker who can create a ton of chances for his wingers. He plays with poise, has a pro level shot and is an excellent puck handler. He has put on close to 20-pounds since joining HIFK in the 2011-12 campaign, giving him more confidence heading into puck battles. In addition to being better able to jostle with opponents, his work in the gym has made him a stronger skater.

Granlund was drafted in the second round of the 2011 NHL Draft.
