USHL to add new team for 2014-15 season
CALGARY, AB -- The United States Hockey League announced on Monday that Madison, WI will be getting a team, joining the USHL at the beginning of the 2014-15 season.
The team, which has not yet been named, will be owned and operated by Madtown Hockey LLC, a consortium of veteran and new USHL owners. Home games will be played at the Veterans Memorial Coliseum at the Alliant Energy Center, which is subject to final lease approval by the Dane County board of supervisors.
The city has hosted a USHL team in past decades; the Madison Capitols competed from 1984-91 before becoming the Wisconsin Capitols from 1991-95.
"We’ve been working on this project for the past nine months in order to insure the USHL returns to Madison as a successful member club," USHL commissioner Skip Prince said in a statement. "We're almost there. Madison has changed and grown over the past 20 years – as has the USHL – but the city has retained a rich hockey tradition and a passionate fan base we think will be thrilled by the caliber of hockey and player the USHL will bring to Veterans Memorial Coliseum. It’s good to come back home."
It will be the USHL's 17th team.
