Monahan ecstatic to sign entry level deal with Calgary

I want to do whatever I can to make them proud and show that I earned this contract.Sean Monahan

CALGARY, AB -- When Sean Monahan answered the phone this afternoon, his elation over signing a three-year entry level contract with the Calgary Flames was immediately evident.

"It means the world to me," the 18 year-old told CalgaryFlames.com. "Obviously getting drafted was an awesome experience but now, to be officially inked in with Calgary ... it is an honour.

"I want to do whatever I can to make them proud and show that I earned this contract."

Monahan, who was drafted sixth overall at the 2013 NHL Draft in New Jersey, turned plenty of heads at the Flames development camp earlier this month. Playing on a line with Johnny Gaudreau in both scrimmages, Monahan looked down-right dominant at times in game-like situations and showed no rookie jitters throughout the six-day camp.

General Manager Jay Feaster announced at the conclusion of camp that getting the pivot under contract was one of the organization's top priorities and the Flames are thrilled to have the Brampton, ON native signed to a three-year deal.

"He had a solid showing at our recent development camp, and as we shared with him afterward, we look forward to watching him play at our rookie tournament in Penticton and then attempt to compete for a spot at main camp in Calgary," Feaster explained.

"From our very first interaction with him, Sean has demonstrated a seriousness of purpose and a steadfast resolve to be the very best player he can be, and his character and work ethic have continued to shine through in his preparation this summer. Not only is Sean a very good hockey player, but he is a great person as well."

With contract negotiations behind him, Monahan is now focusing on preparing for the 2013 Young Stars Classic, running Sept. 5-9 in Penticton, BC, and the Flames main training camp. His time at development camp gave him a taste of what to expect in September and he is looking forward to the challenge that lies ahead.

"I learned how the organization works," he said of his time in Calgary earlier this month. "It's all about hard work. Everyone I met and every one I worked with were really down to Earth and now I know what to expect come training camp."

Monahan will be spending a good chunk of the summer training at home in Ontario with his trainer but has tweaked his off-season training regimen after his development camp experience.

In addition to working with coaches in the organization on the ice, prospects also consulted with Flames strength and conditioning coach Rich Hesketh on a regular basis. He combed over each player's individual fitness testing results, showing them which areas they excelled in and what they needed to work on. The players also attended a nutrition seminar to enhance their day-to-day training regimens and overall fitness levels.

"Rich is a first class guy and I learned a lot from him," Monahan stated. "I want continue working on my strength training and change up my diet a bit ... I'm going to be working really hard this summer to get ready for camp."

For fans wanting to watch Monahan and his fellow Flames prospects at the Young Stars Classic, tournament ticket packages (which include a ticket to eight tournament games) are $70 plus applicable fees and are on sale now.
