QMJHL HISTORY

The Quebec Major Junior Hockey League, one of three bodies that form the Canadian Hockey League, was established in 1969 with 11 teams merging together from the Quebec Junior Hockey League and the Metropolitan Montreal Junior Hockey League.

Starting in 1994, the QMJHL expanded east outside of Quebec, adding franchises in Atlantic Canada.

Currently, the QMJHL is comprised of 18 teams, including six outside of Quebec.

Current Quebec Major Junior Hockey League alumni include Sidney Crosby, Claude Giroux, Vincent Lecavalier, Brad Richards, Kris Letang, Jonathan Huberdeau, Sean Couturier and Jonathan Bernier,

Current Flames Steve Begin and Alex Tanguay also played in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League.

Retired QMJHL alumni include Mario Lemieux, Ray Bourque, Marcel Dionne, Dale Hawerchuk, Luc Robitaille, Patrick Roy and Denis Savard.

FLAMES IN THE QMJHL

The Calgary Flames have traditionally stayed clear of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League of late, going 37 consecutive picks from 2006 to 2012 between drafting Hugo Carpentier in the fourth round in 2006 to Ryan Culkin, selected in the fourth round of the 2012 NHL Draft.
