IIHF World Championship Update: 06.05.13
CALGARY, AB -- The Calgary Flames have five players suiting up for their respective countries in the 2013 IIHF World Hockey Championships in Helsinki, Finland and Stockholm, Sweden: Jiri Hudler, Reto Berra, TJ Brodie, Chris Butler and Joni Ortio.
Hudler currently leads the Czech Republic in scoring with three goals in three games. He potted two tallies against his new teammate Berra on Monday morning and was the only Czech to find the back of the net in the 5-2 loss to Switzerland. Hudler's shooting percentage, sitting at 33.3 per cent, is second only to Radim Vrbata on the Czech roster.
Berra played his first game of the tournament on Monday morning and backstopped the Swiss to their third straight win at the tournament. He made 37 saves against the Czech Republic, giving him a 2.00 GAA and a .949 save percentage.
Brodie is getting his first taste of international play in the tournament, dressing for Canada. The young blueliner has played two games thus far and is a minus-one. He has averaged 12:19 of ice time in those two outings. Canada is 1-0-1, topping Denmark 3-1 on Saturday and falling 3-2 to Switzerland in a shootout on Sunday.
This is Butler's third stint with USA Hockey and second time playing for the USA at the IIHF World Championships. The rearguard has dressed for both games the Americans have played, earning an even rating and averaging 13:13 of ice time. The USA is 2-0-0 early in the tournament, collecting wins over Austria on Saturday and Latvia on Sunday.
Ortio has played for Finland on numerous occasions in his career but this is his first appearance at the World Championships. The netminder has started two games thus far, making 15 saves in a 4-3 victory against Germany on Friday and made 21 saves in the Finns 3-1 win over France on Monday. His GAA currently sits at 1.97 and his 36 stops have his save percentage at .900.
