Backlund not cleared to play at the World Ice Hockey Championships

CALGARY, AB -- Flames forward Mikael Backlund will not be able to suit up for Sweden at the 2013 IIHF World Ice Hockey Championships in May due to a right foot fracture.

He had been asked to play prior to the conclusion of the 2012-13 season and after undergoing his year-end medical testing, the malady was discovered and he was deemed unable to play.

Backlund played for his country in the 2010 World Ice Hockey Championships tournament, scoring three goals and five points in nine games. He also played for Sweden twice in the U20 World Junior Championships (2008 & 2009) and at the 2007 U18 World Junior Championships.
