Gillies named Hockey Commissioners\' Association Rookie of the Year

PITTSBURGH, PA -- The Providence College Friars season may have come to an end weeks ago but netminder Jon Gillies continues to rack up awards for his outstanding freshman season in Rhode Island.

On Friday, the Hockey Commissioners' Association (HCA) named Gillies the National Division I Rookie of the Year, making him the first Friar to ever gain national rookie of the year honours. He was also named to the American Hockey Coaches Association All-America East second-team.

"Being named the Rookie of the Year and an All-American are both amazing honors and I would like to thank everyone who was part of the decision process," Gillies told Providence College Friars Athletics. "I know I wouldn't be anywhere without my family, Coach Leaman and his staff and their belief in me, and most of all my teammates who had my back no matter what and without fail this season."

Gillies 2012-13 awards are numerous; he was the Hockey East Rookie of the Year, a First-Team Hockey East All-Star and a part of the Hockey East All-Rookie Team, the College Hockey News Rookie of the Year, part of the All-College Hockey News Second Team and the College Hockey News All-Rookie Team, the New England Hockey Writers Association George C. Carens Award winner, a New England Hockey Writers Association Div. I All-Star, a Walter Brown Award Semifinalist, the Hockey East Rookie of the Month twice, the HCA Rookie of the Month on two occasions and nabbed 17 Hockey East weekly awards. Gillies was also a part of the USA team that won gold at the 2013 World Junior Championships.

The Flames drafted the South Portland, ME native in the third round (75th overall) in the 2012 NHL Draft.
