Gillies earns New England Hockey Writers Association honours

CALGARY, AB -- Calgary Flames prospect and Providence College starting netminder Jon Gillies has earned the George C. Carens Award as the Rookie of the Year from the New England Hockey Writers Association and was also one of two goaltenders named to the Div. I All-Star Team.

The freshman went 17-12-6 this season and posted a Friar-record five shutouts. He finished the year with a 2.08 GAA - the second best mark in program history for a single season - and a .931 save percentage. His 922 saves is the fifth-highest single season saves total in Friar history. His performance this season led the Friars all the way to the Hockey East semi-finals this year.

Gillies has earned multiple accolades in his first year with Providence including being named Hockey East's Rookie of the Year, College Hockey News Rookie of the Year and was the first-ever freshman to be selected to the Hockey East First-Team.

The other players named to the Div. I All-Star Team were Johnny Gaudreau (Boston College), Kenny Agostino (Yale), Steven Whitney (Boston College), Mike Collins (Merrimack), Brett Gensler (Bentley), Joe Pendenza (UMass Lowell), Trevor van Riemsdyk (New Hampshire), Chad Ruhwedel (UMass Lowell), Mike Matheson (Boston College), Jordan Heywood (Merrimack) and Eric Hartzell (Quinnipiac).
