Inside The Game: Flames vs. Ducks

DUCKS BLANK FLAMES 4-0

CALGARY, AB -- The Anaheim Ducks made sunny California a little cloudier for the Calgary Flames.

Ryan Getzlaf had a goal and an assist and Viktor Fasth stopped all 29 shots faced for his second career shutout as the Ducks shutout the Flames 4-0 at the Honda Center on Friday night.

The loss runs Calgary’s winless drought to 16 games in Anaheim (17-3-3) with their last win coming on January 19th, 2004.

Daniel Winnik opened the scoring with his sixth of the season just 1:15 into the game on the Ducks’ first shot, taking a feed from below the goal line courtesy Andrew Cogliano and burying it by the blocker of Calgary (9-9-4) starter Miikka Kipruosff for the early 1-0 win.

Anaheim extended that lead to two in the back half of the middle frame. Able to keep in a clearing attempt, Corey Perry eventually worked the puck to Bobby Ryan in the slot, who beat Kiprusoff at 13:38.

Two minutes later, Sheldon Souray’s shot from the point through traffic eluded Kiprusoff, extending the lead to 3-0.

Getzlaf put the finishing touches on the Flames with 3:42 remaining in the third period courtesy a nifty play from Ryan, who redirected a Luca Sbisa shot onto the stick of the former Calgary Hitmen captain parked to Kiprusoff’s left for a tap-in.

SAVE OF THE GAME

After putting his clearing attempt on the stick of Ryan, Kiprusoff scrambled back into position and got set in time to rob the Ducks’ forward with his glove 22 seconds into the second period to temporarily keep the Flames within one.

HIT OF THE GAME

After taking a hit from Sbisa in the Anaheim zone, Jarome Iginla returned the favor, crunching the Ducks defenseman along the end boards late in the second period.

TURNING POINT

A turnover in Calgary’s zone ended end up the back of the net after the benefit of Perry and Getzlaf’s hard work ended up on the stick of Ryan, who promptly buried the puck behind Kiprusoff to make it 2-0 Ducks at 13:38.

QUOTE OF THE NIGHT

“As soon as they scored the second goal, I had no idea what happened. We had them.”

-Steve Begin

STAT OF THE NIGHT

Despite being the smaller of the two clubs, the Flames out-hit the mighty Ducks 34-21 in the game.
