Heat Report: 29.01.13

The Abbotsford Heat extended their winning streak to five games over the weekend before having that run snapped in the second of a back-to-back with the Charlotte Checkers.

Finding the back of the net for the third consecutive game, Brett Carson had a goal while Dustin Sylvester had his three-point game in his AHL career to lift the Heat over the Checkers in Charlotte Friday.

Sylvester added another Saturday but Abbotsford – out-shot 39-18 – fell to the Checkers 5-4 Saturday.

Coming out of the weekend with two points, the Heat now own sole possession of the top spot in the Western Conference’s North Division with 51 points. Abbotsford holds a one-point edge over the Toronto Marlies, who have played two fewer games. The Lake Erie Monsters also sit at 50 points on the season, but have played one more game than the Heat.

BRUST SHINES IN SKILLS COMP

Already set to appear in the 2013 AHL All-Star Game, Heat goaltender Barry Brust showed off his wares a day early at the 2013 Pepsi American Hockey League All-Star Skills Competition Sunday in Providence, R.I.

Brust, Justin Peters of the Charlotte Checkers and Grand Rapids Griffins goaltender Petr Mrazek combined to stop the last 14 attempts by Eastern Conference shooters in the H&R Block Breakaway Relay, enabling the West to rally from a 7-2 deficit.

Also participating in the EA Sports NHL 13 Rapid Fire, the Heat goaltender turned aside four of 10 shots faced from Bobby Butler (Albany River Rats) and Radko Gudas (Syracuse Crunch) and denied all three attempts faced in the Pepsi Pass and Score event.

HEAT VICTORIOUS IN ALL-STAR GAME

Brust, Quintin Laing and the West came out of the AHL All-Star Game victorious, beating the Eastern Conference 7-6 Monday night.

Starting the second period for the Western Conference, Brust stopped 13 of 16 shots faced before giving way to Mrazek.

Despite firing five shots on East goalies, Laing was held off the score sheet in the game.

ROSTER UPDATE

Forward David Eddy has been reassigned to the Utah Grizzlies of the ECHL. Eddy has played in six games with the Heat this season after missing the majority of the first half of the season due to injury. In six games with the Grizzlies, Eddy has two assists.

Joining the heat last week on loan, Adam Estoclet has also been returned to the Grizzlies. In 18 games for Abbotsford, Estoclet has two assists.
