Feaster announces several roster moves
CALGARY, AB -- On Thursday afternoon, Calgary Flames general manager Jay Feaster announced several roster moves.
Defenceman Chris Breen and forward Ben Street have been assigned to the Abbotsford Heat,
"Breener did a real good job but right now he's not one of the 'd' that we're prepared to put on our starting roster," Feaster said. "Ben Street, who also came in and did a real good job, but again, right now, we're not prepared to have him on the 23-man roster to start."
Neither Breen nor Street need to clear waivers to be reassigned to the Heat.
Forward Brad Winchester has been released from his professional tryout agreement.
"Brad did a great job here this week and we told that. This is a very, very difficult situation for a guy who is going to play on your third or fourth line ... it's tough. We thought he did a real good job but we're just not prepared to offer him a contract right now."
There has been questions relating to why the team has placed two goaltenders on waivers and the reason for doing so is simply procedural. The team wanted Karlsson and Irving to compete throughout the duration of camp and the coaching staff is still deciding which player will back-up Miikka Kiprusoff this season.
Given that decision hasn't been made, both goaltenders needed to be placed on waivers so one can be properly assigned on Friday. All teams must have their 23-man roster submitted to the NHL by 5:00 PM EST tomorrow.
"They will either clear or be claimed by noon Eastern Time tomorrow and we'll make decisions from there," Feaster explained. "In order for us to allow that competition to continue today, we needed to be a position that tomorrow, when we have to submit the roster, we have to be able to move guys off the roster.
"We couldn't waive anybody tomorrow is the point."
