2013 WJC Blog: USA vs. Sweden - 05.01.13
The USA rebounded from a disappointing seventh place finish in last year's tournament with a 3-1 win over Sweden in the 2013 IIHF World Junior Championship gold medal game.
Calgary Flames prospect Johnny Gaudreau was held pointless in the win but was an offensive threat throughout the game. In total, the winger recorded nine points (seven goals, two assists) through seven games.
Gaudreau was one of the five players named to the tournament all-star team. Ryan Nugent-Hopkins (Canada), Filip Forsberg (Sweden), Jacob Trouba (USA), Jake McCabe (USA) and John Gibson (USA) were also named to the team, which is voted on by the media.
The 19 year-old was also named one of the USA's top three players in the tournament. That honour is chosen by each team.
Sieloff remained on the second defensive pairing, playing alongside Trouba. He earned his first point of the tournament, an assist on the Americans first goal of the game.
18 year-old Jon Gillies backed up tournament MVP John Gibson and played one period in the USA's 8-0 win over Germany on Dec. 27.
After a scoreless first period, both teams found the back of the net in the second frame.
Filip Sandberg opened the scoring at 1:09 while the Swedes were on the power play. Seth Jones was unable able to control the puck as it bounced around his feet and Sandberg pounced on it. He got a quick shot off in the slot, beating Gibson high glove-side.
Rocco Grimaldi, who had a shot bounce off both goal posts in the opening period, got the USA on the scoresheet when he was able to slide a bad-angled shot under Niklas Lundstrom. It was his first goal of the tournament. Sieloff earned the primary assist on the tally.
Grimaldi gave the USA the lead just under three minutes later when he deflected Jacob Trouba's point shot.
Vince Trocheck scored an empty net goal with 16.7 seconds left in regulation, icing the win for his country.
