2013 WJC Blog: Canada vs. Russia - 31.12.12

Canada earned a bye to the semi-finals at the World Junior Championship with a 4-1 victory against Russia on Monday.

Calgary Flames prospect Tyler Wotherspoon took quite the beating in the first period. He took a skate to the face after a collision with a Russian forward behind the net and then was hit from behind by Valeri Nichushkin. He immediately went to the locker room to be evaluated by the Canadian medical staff and did not return to the game until the second period.

Wotherspoon ended up with seven stitches from his rough first period.

After one period of play, Canada held a 2-1 lead over Russia thanks to goals from Dougie Hamilton and Mark Scheifele. Both tallies were products of the 5:00 power play awarded to Canada after the Nichushkin hit on Wotherspoon.

Russia's goal in the first period came off of the stick of Nikita Kucherov at 17:36. Scheifele turned the puck over in the Canadian zone and Kucherov one-timed the loose puck past Malcom Subban.

The Canadians gained a 3-1 lead after two periods as 2013 draft-eligible forward Jonathan Drouin found the back of the net at 6:31. His wraparound backhand shot was nearly stopped by Makarov as he threw out his pad but Drouin banked the puck off the netminder's toe for his second goal of the tournament.

Jonathan Huberdeau scored an empty-netter with under a minute left in regulation.

Canada will face the winner of the USA-Czech Republic quarter-final game on Thursday. That game can be seen on TSN.
