2013 WJC Blog: USA vs. Germany - 27.12.12

Calgary Flames prospects Johnny Gaudreau and Jon Gillies both hit the ice in the Americans 8-0 win over Germany at the 2013 IIHF World Junior Championship on Thursday.

Gaudreau was on the left wing of the American top line, playing alongside J.T. Miller and Rocco Grimaldi. While he was held pointless in the victory, he did send five shots on net and showed off his speed and creativity throughout the game. He had several good scoring opportunities in the last two periods.

Gillies, the Flames third round draft pick in 2012, took over in net for John Gibson in the third period. The 18 year-old stopped all seven shots he faced and looked very solid when faced with the task of shutting down the Germans on a 5-on-3 power play.

The USA is back in action tomorrow as they take on Russia at 7:00 AM MT. The game will be broadcast on TSN and the NHL Network.

Sean Kuraly opened the scoring just 19 seconds into the game after a great passing play with Alex Galchenyuk. Galchenyuk collected a loose puck in the neutral zone and dished it off to Kuraly as he entered the offensive zone. Kuraly slipped it five hole on Marvin Cupper to give his team the early 1-0 lead.

Defenceman Jacob Trouba made it 2-0 at 9:30 when his shot from the point snuck past Cupper. The German netminder had traffic in front of him and may not have even seen Trouba wind up for the shot.

Galchenyuk added to his point total around the midway mark of the first frame when his strong individual effort ended up in the back of the net. Picking off the puck along the boards, he zipped towards the net unimpeded. Once he was in the slot, he whipped off a hard shot that flew over top of Cupper.

The USA notched their fourth goal 15 seconds into the second period when Riley Barber buried a feed from Galchenyuk, who had corralled the puck behind the German net. It was both Barber and Galchenyuk's third point of the night.

Shayne Gostisbehere made it 5-0 with a howitzer that went into the top corner. Seth Jones and Grimaldi earned the assists on the defenceman's first goal of the tournament.

Cole Bardreau and Ryan Hartman teamed up for the sixth goal of the game, coming at 7:55 of the second period. Bardreau threw a shot on net and while Cupper made the save, he sent the rebound right to Hartman. The winger tossed it top shelf to complete the play.

After a bit of a slow start to the third period - a result of an American penalty box parade - Miller gave his country a 7-0 lead. He picked up a German turnover and drove to the net. It looked like he had run out of real estate but managed to stuff it past Cupper while he was in tight.

The 2013 draft-eligible rearguard Jones notched the Americans eighth goal. The Plano, TX native stepped into the play and slapped a hard shot into the net.

In total, the Americans put 46 shots on net while the Germans total sat at 26.
