2013 WJC Blog: Finland vs. Latvia - 26.12.12
While Finland was able to top Latvia 5-1 in their first game of the 2013 IIHF World Junior Championship, they lost one of their top forwards for the rest of the tournament.
Miro Aaltonen broke his ankle in the victory, an injury that could also put his 2012-13 season with the Espoo Blues of the SM-liiga at risk. He was hit and as he fell to the ice, his ankle twisted underneath him.
Aaltonen notched three points (two goals, one assist) against Latvia.
Calgary Flames prospect Markus Granlund once again centered Finland's top line and picked up his first goal of the tournament in the win when he was able to convert on a Joel Armia pass. The duo played extremely well together in Finland's two exhibition wins with Armia acting as Granlund's playmaker.
Granlund ended the game with four shots on net and won 11 of his 16 draws.
2013 draft-eligible prospects Artturi Lehkonen and Rasmus Ristolainen also scored for Finland. Nikolajs Jelisejevs recorded Latvia's lone goal.
Finland's next game is on Dec. 28 against the Czech Republic.
