2013 WJC Blog: Canada vs. Germany - 26.12.12

Canada opened the 2013 IIHF World Junior Championship with an authoritative 9-3 victory over Germany on Wednesday, giving them their 14th consecutive tournament-opening win.

Malcom Subban got the call in net for the Canadians while Elmar Trautmann took the reigns for Germany.

Calgary Flames prospect Tyler Wotherspoon was paired with Morgan Rielly on the blueline. The two played together in Canada's exhibition game against Sweden last week.

Wotherspoon, a second round pick in 2011, scored his scored his first goal of the tournament in the win. He sent three shots on net and was a plus-one.

Canada got themselves on the board before the 5:00 mark with a power play marker. With Sebastian Uvira in the box for roughing, Xavier Ouellet tried to make a pass to Ty Rattie but the puck bounced off a German and into the back of the net, beating Trautmann five hole.

Canadian captain Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, who picked up five points in the game, gave his team a 2-0 lead later on in the first frame with another goal with the man advantage. Nugent-Hopkins was able to get himself behind the German penalty killers, take the Jonathan Huberdeau feed and backhand it into the net.

Germany responded with a power play goal of their own late in the first period. Leonhard Pfoderl was able to find Tobias Rieder wipe open at the side of the net and the forward had a yawning cage to bat the puck into.

The Canadians really pushed the Germans in the second period, scoring four goals and looking positively dominant in the offensive zone. Mark Scheifele (2), Ryan Strome and Rattie all found the back of the net in the period.

However, Germany refused to go down without a fight and they managed two goals late in the middle frame.

Leonhard Pfoderl's backhand slipped past Subban for his second point of the game at 16:22 while Nickolas Latta picked off a Canadian turnover and wired a slap shot into the back of the net at 18:14.

2013 draft-eligible forward Jonathan Drouin made it 8-3 in the third period, deftly avoiding a pokecheck from Trautmann and backhanding it in. Scott Harrington set up the goal with a perfectly-placed slap pass from the point.

Wotherspoon added Canada's ninth goal of the game late in regulation. After jumping up into the play, he wired a pass from Strome towards the net and past Trautmann.
