Hockey Canada Selection Camp Blog: Day 1

Calgary Flames prospects Laurent Brossoit and Tyler Wotherspoon skated in the same group on Tuesday morning at the Hockey Canada 2013 World Junior Selection Camp practice, both looking to make a statement with the coaches in their final bid to be named to the Team Canada roster.

Brossoit is gunning for the starting goaltender position, battling with the likes of Malcom Subban, Jordan Binnington and Jake Paterson.

"My main focus is to be the starting goalie and nothing else but that," Brossoit stated after a brisk 45 minute practice at WinSport. "To do that, I'm going to have to keep my game simple and go back to my foundation."

Wotherspoon was paired up with Vancouver Canucks prospect Frank Corrado during Team Red's practice and may play together tonight at the Red-White intrasquad game at 7:00 PM MT.

"Practice felt good," the blueliner said. "I'm really excited for tonight, it should be really good."

COACH'S COMMENTS

Head coach Steve Spott is feeling very good about the players chosen to attend selection camp after seeing both groups practice this morning.

"There's a lot of skill out there, my Lord," he chuckled. "It was exciting to see them and get on the ice with that group finally for the first time."

Spott is expecting a spirited affair tonight in the intrasquad match-up and is looking forward to seeing the 37 invitees get their first taste of game action at camp.

"I think these boys are going to be cranked up and ready to go. I think you're going to see a lot of physicality, a lot of speed. This is a very good group so it's going to be exciting."

"We only have three lines on each team so it will be interesting to see how we do with the tempo but ultimately, we may adjust the length of the periods to control that."

Defenceman Xavier Ouellet sprained his ankle a couple of weeks ago and is questionable for tonight's tilt but Spott is optimistic he will be able to play.

"We're going to talk now with our therapists, see how he felt. I thought he looked okay and he felt pretty good after so we'll meet with our therapist and make our decision before the game."
