Brossoit, Wotherspoon headed to Hockey Canada 2013 National Junior Team selection camp

CALGARY, AB -- Calgary Flames prospects Laurent Brossoit and Tyler Wotherspoon have been named to Hockey Canada's 37-man 2013 National Junior Team selection camp roster. The camp runs Dec. 11-13 at the Markin MacPhail Centre at Canada Olympic Park in Calgary.

Both Brossoit and Wotherspoon played for Team WHL at the 2012 Subway Super Series, an integral scouting tool for Team Canada prior to the IIHF World Junior Hockey Championship. Brossoit shut the door on the Russians in Game 1, making 30 stops in Team WHL's 1-0 victory.

Brossoit was a key factor in the Edmonton Oil Kings tremendous 2011-12 season, posting a 42-13-2 record in the regular season with a .914 save percentage and a 2.47 GAA. He went 16-4-0 in the postseason, helping the Oil Kings capture the WHL Championship. He was named the named the WHL Championship series MVP for his efforts.

The Surrey, BC native has suited up for 18 games with the Oil Kings this season. He has a 11-2-5 record with a .904 save percentage and a 2.56 GAA.

Wotherspoon, who was named one of the Portland Winterhawks assistant captains this year, is in the midst of an incredibly strong season. He leads the CHL with a plus-34 rating and has amassed 19 points (3 goals, 16 assists) through 25 games.

Of the 37 players invited to the selection camp, six are returning players – Dougie Hamilton (Toronto, Ont./Niagara, OHL), Scott Harrington (Kingston, Ont./London, OHL), Jonathan Huberdeau (St-Jérôme, Que./Saint John, QMJHL), Boone Jenner (Dorchester, Ont./Oshawa, OHL), Mark Scheifele (Kitchener, Ont./ Barrie, OHL) and Ryan Strome (Mississauga, Ont./ Niagara, OHL) helped Canada earn a bronze medal at the 2012 IIHF World Junior Championship in Alberta. A seventh potential returning player, Ryan Murray (White City, Sask./Everett, WHL), is unavailable due to an injury.

In total, 31 of the players named to the selection camp roster were drafted in either the 2011 or 2012 NHL Entry Drafts, including 13 first-round selections and eight second-round picks.

There will be one Red-White intrasquad game (Dec. 11) and two games against teams from Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) on Dec. 12 and 13. The CIS teams will be comprised of players from the University of Calgary, University of Alberta and Mount Royal University. In lieu of purchasing tickets to attend the game, fans will be asked to present their Club Hockey Canada card or make a donation to either a local food bank (dried goods) or the Hockey Canada Foundation. Practices will be open to the public, free of charge.

Canada’s National Junior Team will depart for Europe on Dec. 15, and play in two pre-competition games in Helsinki prior to the 2013 IIHF World Junior Championship.

Canada will play its first game of the 2013 IIHF World Junior Championship on Boxing Day, Dec. 26 against Finland, a game that will be broadcast LIVE by TSN/RDS.
