2012 Heat Training Camp Guide
The Abbotsford Heat 2012 training camp on-ice sessions kick off on Saturday, Sept. 29 and the coaching staff are going to have several tough decisions to make with 44 players jostling for roster spots in the 2012-13 season. The Heat have several members of the 2011-12 roster - which put together a franchise-record 42 wins - attending camp but there are also 19 newcomers looking to snag a spot in the lineup.
The battle between forwards will be particularly interesting as the Heat need to boost their point production if they want to top last year's record. They finished 11th in goals scored in the 15-team AHL Western Conference with only Krys Kolanos surpassing the 20-goal mark. Rookies like Sven Baertschi, Max Reinhart and Michael Ferland are in the hunt to land a top-nine role with the club but there are several Heat regulars, who are looking to rebound from their subpar production last year, they'll have to best in order to gain them.
There are question marks on the blueline as well. The Heat have several players coming into their first year with the organization and no one is sure where they fall on the depth chart. Rookie Brady Lamb impressed the Flames brass at development camp this summer but he will be facing stronger competition in Abbotsford. TJ Brodie will likely take on big minutes with the club after spending the bulk of the 2011-12 season in the NHL. 29 year-old Joe Callahan, 27 year-old Zach McKelvie and 26 year-old Nick Tuzzolino all signed AHL deals with the team this summer, giving them more depth.
In the crease, AHL veterans Danny Taylor and Barry Brust will be squaring off against Leland Irving - a late addition to the training camp roster.
