CALGARY, AB -- When Blake Comeau checked in with CalgaryFlames.com after signing on for another year with the  Flames, the elation he felt over the deal was very evident even over the phone.

"I grew up in Saskatchewan and my family is from out west so it was a real special time in my career last year to be able to come over to Calgary," he said. "I'm so excited, my family is so excited.

"I'm so happy we got something done. I can get it out of the back of my mind and just move forward with my training and get ready for the season."

The Flames acquired Comeau last fall when they grabbed him off waivers from the New York Islanders. The winger was pointless through his first 16 games of the year but was coming off a career season which saw him score 24 goals and 46 points.

He hoped the change of scenery would help pick up his offensive production but through 58 games with the Flames last year, he recorded just five goals and 15 points.

"There's no question I struggled offensively last year" he said. "But I feel like I still have that left in me - where I can get back to the point production I was at two years ago.

"Last year, I feel like I learned a lot about what kind of player I need to be and the things I need do to be an impact player to help the Flames win games."

Comeau was one of three RFA's not given a qualifying offer on Monday but General Manager Jay Feaster noted that afternoon the team would try to get a deal done with the winger before July 1. The forward could have opted to become a UFA on Sunday but Comeau said testing the open market didn't even cross his mind.

"I really enjoyed my time in Calgary last year. I thought they treated me really well since the moment I got there. I think we've got really good guys in the locker room and we're just a few pieces away from doing something really special."
