Flames nab homegrown talent

PITTSBURGH, PA - Coda Gordon described it as his best-case scenario for the 2012 NHL Draft.

The Swift Current Broncos forward was picked by his hometown team in the sixth round, 165th overall Saturday.

“Looking back I never would of thought any of this would happen,” the Cochrane product said. “To be drafted by my hometown team is pretty special.”

Growing up a fan of the Calgary Flames made his draft experience

The fact that Gordon didn’t interview with the Flames at the NHL Combine made the pick even more surprising to him.

“I didn’t talk to them at the Combine but I talked to them once during the regular season,” said Gordon, who played with Edge School Mountaineers in the Midwest Prep Hockey League before joining Swift Current. “I’m still a little shock about what’s happened. It’s all happened so fast but I definitely enjoy it.”

Staying back in Calgary instead of heading to Pittsburgh, Gordon was a little preoccupied when the Flames made the pick.

“There was a fundraiser tournament, 3-on-3 tournament we do,” he explained. “I was just part of that and stayed in Calgary. “I was just finishing when I got drafted. The tournament is still going on. We’ve only played one game so far.”

He’ll bring to the tournament what he brought to the Broncos this year, and what he hopes to add to the Flames in the future.

“II tend to just stand in front of the net and bang them in,” Gordon said. “None of my goals are really flashy. I just stay around the net and tip pucks and be in the right place at the right time.”

He was in that right place 30 times last season, fourth-best among rookies in the Western Hockey League.

And while Swift Current is currently home for Gordon, the 18-year-old is dreaming to quickly returning home to Calgary as a member of the Flames.
